Travel eSIM not working? Diagnose no service or no mobile data

Diagnose a travel eSIM that is stuck activating, shows no service or has signal without mobile data before deleting it or buying another plan.

The short answer

Do not delete the eSIM or buy another plan first. Identify whether the problem is a missing profile, activation timing, line selection, network registration, mobile-data settings or a plan that cannot serve the current place and time.

Keep the eSIM profile while you identify the failure

An installed profile is not proof that the plan is active, connected or valid, but deleting it can remove information needed for recovery. Keep the profile and provider instructions in place while you identify the symptom. Do not publish or send a QR code, activation code, account password, IMEI or EID through an unverified support channel.

Another purchase is not a general repair. A second plan will not fix a locked or unsupported phone, the wrong data line, a local outage or an account problem. Start with low-risk checks that can distinguish those causes without erasing the current setup.

Separate four symptoms before changing settings

If the eSIM does not appear in the phone's SIM or cellular settings, the setup itself may be incomplete. If it appears but stays on “Activating,” activation or provider confirmation may still be pending. If the phone says “No Service” or “Searching,” it is not registered on a cellular network. If bars or an operator appear but websites do not load with Wi-Fi off, focus on the selected data line, mobile data, allowance and provider settings.

Write down the exact status and when it changes, but keep identifiers private. This symptom split prevents an APN change from being used for a missing profile, or a replacement purchase from being used for a temporary registration problem.

Confirm that the exact plan should work here and now

Read the selected offer or delivery instructions for its activation trigger. Current offers can start on installation, first supported-network connection, purchase or provider-defined timing. Then check that the validity window has started and not ended, data remains available, and the exact current country appears in the plan's country list.

Do not infer service from a regional label, a network name or the fact that installation succeeded. If the country, date or remaining allowance cannot be confirmed, ask the plan provider before changing device settings or selecting a replacement.

Check that the travel line is enabled and selected for data

On iPhone, review the intended line under Cellular and confirm that it is turned on and selected for cellular data. On Pixel, Google places the active SIM, Use SIM and Mobile data controls under Network & internet. On supported Galaxy phones, SIM Manager lets the user enable a line and choose the mobile-data SIM. Menu names and dual-SIM behavior vary by model, software and carrier.

Change only the setting you can identify. Do not assume that enabling the travel line makes calls or messages use it, or that selecting it for data prevents every charge on the home line. A data-only travel plan still does not gain carrier calls, SMS or a phone number unless the exact offer says so.

Test network registration without erasing the setup

Turn Wi-Fi off briefly so the test measures cellular service. Check whether the expected line is enabled and whether a network or signal appears. Apple recommends cycling Airplane Mode, turning the affected line off and on, restarting, and checking carrier settings or software. Google likewise recommends checking Mobile data, Use SIM, Airplane Mode, network type and signal before contacting the carrier.

Move only enough to rule out an obviously signal-poor spot; this does not prove route-wide coverage. Do not factory-reset the phone or reset all network settings as a routine step. Google and Samsung warn that network resets affect saved Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or other network settings, so use them only with informed manufacturer or provider support.

Treat roaming, APN and network choice as provider-specific

Some travel plans use partner networks and instruct the user to enable data roaming on the travel line; other line and carrier combinations have different consequences. Follow the exact plan instructions rather than applying one universal roaming rule to both the travel and home lines.

Use an APN or manual network selection only when the provider supplies the exact value or instruction for that plan. Do not copy an APN from an unrelated article or force a named operator merely because it appears on a comparison card. Local registration still depends on the device, plan, partner network, place and current availability.

Know when to stop changing the phone

If the profile is missing, activation remains pending, the line cannot register or provider-specific settings are unavailable, contact the plan provider with the privately recorded error and purchase context. Apple, Google and Samsung all direct persistent account, plan, coverage or activation problems to the relevant carrier or service provider.

Use a trusted private support channel and never post the QR code, activation code, IMEI, EID, password or account details publicly. Keep an offline copy of essential bookings and addresses while the issue is investigated. Do not delete the eSIM unless the provider confirms that removal and reinstallation are safe for that exact profile.

Compare a replacement only when the diagnosis supports it

A replacement comparison is appropriate when the current plan is expired or exhausted, does not list the current destination, or the provider confirms that it cannot supply the needed service. It is not evidence-based when the likely cause is device support, line selection, local network availability or an unresolved provider account state.

Before checkout, verify the exact country list, validity, activation trigger, data and every required capability on the new card. Current cards must explicitly include any needed hotspot, calls, SMS or 5G; do not expect a new data plan to provide emergency service or repair the old profile.
