The short answer
Use this workflow when the passport is still in your possession but is wet, torn, marked, separating, has a damaged photo or data page, or its electronic part may have failed. Do not repair, laminate, trim, tape, erase or test it in a way that changes the document. Its appearance alone does not let a traveler or eSIM shop decide whether it is valid, readable or acceptable. Record the condition privately, contact the authority that issued it, follow only its instructions and verify every carrier, transit and border step after that decision. Use the separate lost-or-stolen process if possession is actually lost. A data-only eSIM can support later ordinary web access; it cannot validate or replace a passport, grant boarding or entry, make calls, receive carrier SMS or guarantee reception.
Preserve the passport without trying to repair it
Stop handling the passport more than necessary. Keep it dry, flat and protected from further abrasion, heat, adhesive and loose liquids. Do not peel a laminate, press pages together, rewrite a mark, clean a chip, staple a tear or remove a loose part. Keep any detached piece with the document without attaching it. Privately note when and how the change was noticed and take clear condition photographs only if the issuing authority permits them; do not publish the identity page, passport number, signature, machine-readable zone or live location. Visible wear, a readable screen or a successful hotel check does not prove that a carrier or border authority will accept the document. If theft or disappearance is involved, switch to the lost-or-stolen passport workflow rather than describing the document as merely damaged.
Ask the issuing authority to classify the next step
Open the official passport or foreign-affairs website for the country that issued the document, using an address found independently rather than a link in an unsolicited message. Find the competent passport office, embassy or consulate for your present location. State only the observed condition and the next booked journeys; do not declare the passport valid or invalid yourself. Ask whether an in-person assessment is required, whether use must stop, what replacement or emergency-document route applies, which originals, photographs, report, appointment and fee are required, and what contact channel works if ordinary web access fails. Record the case reference and exact instruction. Your Europe explains travel-document rules but also makes clear that national authorities decide document issuance and exceptional travel arrangements; a generic page cannot approve this particular passport.
Rebuild every carrier, transit and border decision
After the issuing authority answers, list each remaining flight, rail or ferry operator, departure control, transit country, destination border and return segment. Give each responsible organization the document type and authority decision through its verified channel, without sending a full passport copy unless that channel requires and protects it. Ask what document it will accept for that exact segment and obtain a written outcome where possible. A carrier accepting a booking, online check-in or a photograph does not grant border admission; one border or outbound journey does not prove acceptance on the return. Recheck visas, residence evidence and authorizations that may be linked to the old passport. Change or cancel travel only through the responsible provider, and keep accommodation, insurer and employer updates separate from the document decision.
Create a private offline handoff and independent contact route
Save the official office address, opening requirements, appointment confirmation, non-sensitive case reference, accepted itinerary, terminal or station and accommodation address so they remain readable in airplane mode. Keep sensitive identity evidence in a protected location and share only what the authority requests. Write down a conventional telephone route or staffed location because current CheapESIM offers list ordinary data, not carrier calls, SMS or a local number. If a deadline, safety issue or imminent departure requires urgent official contact, use the authority's stated urgent route; an app message is not a substitute unless that authority accepts it. Keep the original damaged document and any replacement instructions physically secure. Never hand it to an unofficial courier, repair service or person claiming that a fee can guarantee boarding.
Buy only for the remaining ordinary-data task
Only after the issuing authority, required appointment, accepted document route and revised itinerary are established should you list remaining non-critical tasks: opening an official portal, receiving ordinary email, viewing a confirmed map or downloading a receipt. Subtract tested home roaming, trusted Wi-Fi and offline copies. Continue only if every country where data will be used is listed by the exact live plan, its activation and validity fit the revised dates, and the available phone is unlocked and compatible. Stop before checkout if you still need passport assessment or replacement, guaranteed urgent contact, a conventional call or SMS, identity verification, boarding or entry approval, payment acceptance, legal advice or guaranteed service at an embassy, airport, station, port or border. Mobile data supplies none of those outcomes.
