Follow local authority, next-of-kin, insurer and nationality-correct consular instructions before changing custody, belongings or travel.

The short answer

Use this guide only after a competent medical or local authority has confirmed a death abroad. An unresponsive or missing person remains an emergency or missing-person case, not a death to infer. Follow immediate scene instructions, identify the local authority controlling registration and release, notify the lawful next of kin through the responsible route, and contact the deceased person's insurer and nationality-correct embassy or consulate. Do not promise repatriation, move the person, cancel documents, distribute belongings or make funeral arrangements without authority. Rebuild the surviving party's safe itinerary and independent urgent contacts first. A data-only eSIM cannot certify or register a death, contact emergency services, provide calls or SMS, authorize custody, pay costs or guarantee reception. Consider it only for a measured, non-critical online remainder.

Keep confirmation and immediate custody with competent authorities

If the person may still be alive, injured or unresponsive, call the locally applicable emergency service and follow dispatch instructions; do not use this article to assess death. After an authorized professional confirms the death, remain where police, medical, hospital, accommodation or transport staff direct unless they release you. Record the authority's name, office, local time, case or incident reference and the exact next instruction. Do not move the person, disturb a room or scene, collect medicines, clean belongings, post images or announce a cause. A death after violence, accident, unexplained illness or another suspicious fact may involve a police, prosecutor, coroner or equivalent process that companions cannot waive or accelerate. Ask for interpretation through a verified channel when you do not understand an instruction.

Establish identity and a lawful next-of-kin route privately

Give the responsible authority only the identity facts and documents it requests: the person's full name, nationality, date of birth, passport details, accommodation, travel booking and any known medical or insurer information. Keep originals in their current custody and make no alteration or cancellation unless the responsible authority instructs it. Tell police or the consular post what verified next-of-kin details you hold and who has already been informed. Do not announce the death publicly before official family notification, infer who has legal authority from a relationship label, or share passport scans, certificates, room numbers or health details in group chats. If you are not the recognized decision-maker, ask what you may do and who can give instructions. Preserve a factual timeline, not theories about cause, liability or inheritance.

Separate local registration, insurance and consular roles

Ask the local authority how the death is registered, which certificate or interim document is issued, when it may be available and whether a certified translation is required. Rules are country-specific; this guide does not claim that a home-country registration replaces the local process. Contact the deceased person's travel insurer promptly through a number or site verified independently, quote only the requested reference and ask what assistance, approved provider and prior authorization apply. Contact the embassy or consulate responsible for the deceased person's nationality, not simply your own. Consular staff may explain local procedures and provider lists, but they do not investigate, override local law, guarantee release, choose for next of kin or necessarily pay medical, funeral, legal or repatriation costs. Keep insurer, authority and consular decisions as separate dated records.

Accept no repatriation, funeral or belongings handover without authority

The lawful next of kin, local authority, insurer and an authorized funeral director may need to decide whether local burial or cremation, or repatriation, is possible and which documents and costs apply. Do not book transport, sign an unfamiliar authority, pay an unverified intermediary or assume a deadline from another country. Verify the provider through the insurer, consular list or competent authority and obtain written scope, price, currency, payer and cancellation terms before the authorized person agrees. Inventory passports, phones, wallets, luggage, medicines, keys and documents only with the custodian; note seals, receipts and the person receiving each item. Do not unlock accounts, use cards, forward one-time codes, erase devices, divide property or carry remains or ashes across a border without the exact official and carrier requirements. Preserve suspicious payment requests for police or insurer review.

Stabilize survivors, then measure only ordinary data

Name one responsible contact for official updates while another person supports children, dependants and distressed companions. Seek urgent medical or mental-health help through local services when anyone is unsafe; ordinary internet access is not crisis care. Confirm the surviving party's accommodation, medicines, documents, baggage, tickets, border requirements and whether a longer stay or early return is actually accepted. Save non-sensitive references and addresses offline, keep an independent emergency and voice route, and tell only the necessary carrier or accommodation facts. Then subtract working roaming, trusted Wi-Fi, insurer or consular assistance and offline files from tasks such as reading a verified update or opening an accepted route. Buy data only if every country, validity, activation trigger, allowance and unlocked compatible phone fits; stop when calls, SMS, urgent contact, guaranteed signal or legal authority are required.
